Gamified Task Management App

A mobile app that combines daily task management
with gamification elements
Assumptions:

The following are assumptions I created in order to complete this design task since I couldn’t conduct actual
research because of the task’s time constraint. However, I did use existing research to create my problem statement and assume the research results.
This research was conducted by Reliable Plant in 2023.

Problem Statement:

People tend to give up on achieving their goals and tasks easily

Research Objective:

Identify the strategies to encourage and motivate people to complete their tasks

Research Methods:

In order to…

• Understand user behavior
• Identify pain points
• Validate important feature ideas

I would conduct…

• Surveys (to screen for potential target user demographics)
• User Interviews (to understand user behavior and pain points)
• Competitive analysis (to identify top features of successful products)
• Affinity mapping (to identify similarities in findings)

From these findings, I would expect to get these outcomes…

• Summaries of strong features
• User personas

Research Results:
  • Only 20% of people set goals for themselves

  • Writing down goals and tasks increases the likelihood of achieving them by 42%

User Benefits:
  • Stay organized

  • Achieve aspirations

  • Improve productivity

Strategy:
  • A reward system for a sense of achievement

  • Gamification elements to keep task completion engaging and fun

  • A simple task creation flow to encourage users to create new tasks

Design Process:
  • Pen & paper (writing down all ideas and directions)

  • User flow for task creation

  • Sketch wireframes

  • High-fidelity screens

  • Prototyping

Onboarding:

During the onboarding process, I focused on highlighting 3 key elements of the app:

  1. The gamification aspect (to inform users that task completion in this app is fun and engaging, therefore improving their likelihood of getting things done)

  2. The progress-tracking feature (for users to monitor their improvements and identify weak points)

  3. The reward system (for a sense of achievement, which is a great motivator for task completion)

Home page:

Galaxy section

I designed a concept in which the user gets star points for task completion but loses star points for not completing their tasks.
By filling up the progress bar in the top section, a user would move by 1 star on the star path.
The unlocked planets/worlds would be stored in the globe icon in the top right part of the screen.

Task panel

User can add new tasks by selecting from a list of suggestions or creating their custom task. They can also edit existing tasks, or mark tasks as complete or canceled.

Progress page:

User can switch between daily, weekly, or monthly views of their progress.
They can also see their daily, weekly, or monthly records in either task completion or cancelation.
